He was predeceased by: his parents, Lucy Carliles Hanford and Matt Ransom Hanford; his son Nelson J. Hanford; and his brothers, Ray Hanford and Billy Hanford.
He is survived by: his sons, Robert Alton Hanford, Jr. (Darlene) of Henderson and Dennis Scott Hanford (Stephanie) of Oxford; and his brothers, Marvin Hanford and Wayne Hanford of Raleigh. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made at to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105-9959.
