He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Lewis Alston and Addie Alston (Young); his granddaughter Alana Alston of Durham; his wife Elaine Walker Alston; his sons, Dorian Alston of Durham and Jarrett Alston; his nieces and nephews, Marion Henderson (Randy Henderson) of New York, Kim Yancey (Christopher Yancey) of New York, William Alston (Addie Alston) of Henderson, James Alston of Henderson and Clint Alston of Henderson; and his great-nephew Brian Henderson (Ebony Henderson) of New York.

Johnny also enjoyed giving to causes he cared about, such as St Jude's Cancer Hospital for children, Native American school for children, National Museum of African American History in Washington DC, and donations to help feed the homeless.
