He is survived by: his wife Kay Frances Bryant Seward; his children, Kim Alexander-Henderson of Greensboro, Karen Alexander-Hylton (Robert) of Burlington Township and Matthew Seward, Jr. (Robin) of Ossining; his brother James Mayfield (Selestine) of Palmer Springs, Virginia; his siblings-in-law, Martha Magnolia Vann of Warrenton, Isaac Talley of Palmer Springs and Daniel Lee Bryant (Sadie) of Goose Creek; and his friend Tonia Davis of Warrenton. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
