He was predeceased by: his parents, Nathan William and Marie Boyce Matthews; his brother Nathan Matthews; and his brother-in-law James Cayton. He is survived by: his wife Carol Cartwright Matthews; his children, Lynn Dalton (Chris) of Nags Head and Davis Matthews (Michele) of Kitty Hawk; his sister-in-law Dottie Cayton of Elizabeth City; and his grandchildren, Amber Dewey (Chris), Kelly Dewey (Christopher) and Michelle Matthews.
