He was predeceased by: his parents, McKinnley Forbes and Lenora Winters Forbes; and his wife Patsy Jean Pittman Forbes. He is survived by: his sons, Joel Ray Forbes (Patty), Jeffrey Scott Forbes and Johnny Burl Forbes (Wendy); his grandchildren, Brandi Forbes, Katie Forbes, Emily Schroeder (Nick) and Riley Teague (Aaron); his great grandchildren, Finnley Schroeder, Brenner Schroeder and Lennon "Teeny" Schroeder; and his brother Butch Forbes.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Wounded Warrior's Project or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Burl's name.
