He was predeceased by: his parents, Samuel Odell Patterson and Iola Payne Patterson; and his sister Marcia Diane Patterson. He is survived by: his wife Barbara S. Patterson; his children, David Ian Patterson of Claremont and Teresa Patterson Bratton of Claremont; his stepdaughter Connie Lee Nicholson of Hickory; and his siblings, Judith Patterson Keller, Roger Dale Patterson and Kay Denise Patterson of Hickory. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
