He was predeceased by: his parents, Russell Poteat and Bonnie Ingle Shook; his wife Judy Poteat; his son Randy Poteat; and his siblings, Gerald Poteat and Kathy Brown.
He is survived by: his children, Eric Poteat (Julia), Angela Townsend (Donald), Sharon Aiken (Bradley) and Judy Killian (Cissie); his stepdaughter Tammy Harris (Bill); his grandchildren, Ashlyn Poteat, Kelly Lail (Jennifer), Clyde Lail (June), Nicholas Frenceschini (Valerie), Brandon Townsend (Dana) and Peyton Wheeler; and his great grandchildren, Kody Lail, Jaden Lail, Tyler Lail, Sarah Lail, Jasmine Townsend and Ezra Townsend.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spencer Road Baptist Church.
