He was predeceased by: his mother Myrtle Young; his wife Shirley Abernathy; his daughters, Gail Buffington and Denise Townsend; his brother Robert Young; and his granddaughter Kyley Burkhalter.
He is survived by: his children, Hal Abernathy (Lori), Gaye Lowman (Terry), Hope Skoney (Jim) and Joli Burkhalter (Tommy); his son-in-law Earnest Townsend; his close friend Peggy Crotts; his brother Charles Young (Carolyn); his nephew Michael Young; and his grandchildren, Briana, Taylor Burkhalter, Curtis Lowman (Tonya), Chase Lowman (Jill), Dustin Townsend and Lance Townsend (Alex). He is also survived by five great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Royal Chapel Kitchen Fund, as he enjoyed their many dinners, at 7190 George Hildebran Road, Hickory, NC 28602.
