He was predeceased by: his parents, Hugh Leatherman and Mary Frye Leatherman; and his brothers, A. L. Leatherman, James Leatherman, Bobby Leatherman, Jerry Leatherman, L. Leatherman and Marvin Leatherman.

He is survived by: his children, Phillip Leatherman (Kim) of Lincolnton and Carie Mosteller (Tracy) of Lincolnton; his sister Elise Sanders of Catawba; his sisters-in-law, Judy Leatherman of Catawba County, Kathy Leatherman of Catawba County and Brenda Leatherman of Catawba CountyNumerous; and his grandchildren, Melissa (JJ), Shane (Kensie), Staci, Jonathan and Grace.
