With profound sadness, we say goodbye to Phylis Jean Rutherford (Hickory, North Carolina), whose vibrant spirit touched the lives of many. Phylis left this world on October 29, 2025 at the age of 89, leaving a void in the lives of so many people. She was predeceased by: her parents, James Preston Ramseur and Lena Mae Davenport Irvin; her stepfather Jesse Irvin; her daughter Phyllis Johnson; her grandson Sonti Hayes; and her siblings, David Ramseur, Richard Ramseur, Melvin Ramseur, Juanita Hoke and Dorothy Rogers.
She is survived by: her children, Brenda Joyce Battle of Baltimore, Robin Rutherford of Greensboro, NC and Rutherford of Seattle; her grandchildren, Robert Johnson II, Micah Anderson, Tonka Hayes, Bridge Hayes and Alja Battle; her son-in-law Robert Johnson Sr.; her brother-in-law Edward Rogers of Hickory, NC; and her close friend Mary Young of Hickory, NC. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandchild.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 5th 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church (340 1st St SW, Hickory, NC 28602). A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, November 5th 2025 at 3:00 PM at the same location.
