He was predeceased by: his parents, Monroe Townsend and Fannie Townsend; his wife Linnie Maxine Smyre Townsend; his siblings, Jennie Townsend, Clara Townsend, Dean Townsend, Thelma Townsend Sigmon, Ruth Townsend Little, Vertie Townsend Hedrick, Carroll Townsend, Glenn Townsend, Ellis Townsend, Max Townsend, John Mark Townsend, Margie Townsend, Robert Townsend and Brenda Townsend Young; and his siblings-in-law, Patricia Smyre Jonas, Jack Reedy, Bayne Jonas and Tony Travis.
He is survived by: his children, Linda Scott (Patrick) of High Point, Pamela Nanney (Gary) of Hickory and Jeffery Townsend (April) of Taylorsville; his brothers, Truman Townsend of Rocky Mount and Edward Townsend of Hickory; his sisters-in-law, Jane Smyre Reedy of Danville, PA and Linda Smyre Travis of Newton; and his grandchildren, Bryan Clontz, Caroline Clontz Kadis, Emily Clontz, Amber Nanney and Ian Nanney. He is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other family members.
