He was predeceased by: his parents, Cluss Ivey Whitener and Ruth Whitener. He is survived by: his wife Cherry Whitener; and his daughters, Wendy Whitener (Phil Dzieduszko) of Chapel Hill and Lea Scholobohm (Rich) of New Providence. He is also survived by three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 26th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel (334 2nd St NW, Hickory, NC 28601). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 26th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the same location. A burial will be held on Saturday, September 26th 2026 at 11:45 AM at the Catawba Memorial Park (3060 US-70, Hickory, NC 28602).
