He was predeceased by: his parents, James King and Stella Hare King; his son Thomas King; and his brothers, Jimmy King, Jesse King and Billy King.

He is survived by: his wife Barbara Hiatt King; his children, Lea Phillips, Darrin McDowell, Chad McDowell and Meredith McDowell; his sisters, Sara Roex, Martha Bean and Louise Hicks; his grandchildren, Josh King, Megan McKinney, Brad McDowell, Lauren Solomon, Whitney Welborn, Kylie Welborn, Brendan McDowell, Keegan McDowell and Jacob Phillips; and his great grandchildren, Levi, Carlee, Athena, Cheyenne, Brady, Braxton and Luke.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Ernest's memory may be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262.
