He was predeceased by: his parents, Roy Tate and Hazel Huffman Tate. He is survived by: his wife Kay Derushia Tate; his sons, Daniel Tate (Christy) and Chris Tate; his brother Willie Tate; his grandchildren, Megan, Summer, Cassie, Mason, Matthew and Noah; and his nephew Lee Tate. He is also survived by 3 great grandchildren.

“I just learned about James passing. I can tell you that I will miss him and that many, many people in the sign industry in North Carolina will as well. I met James shortly after my sign business moved to a factory location on Spring Garden St. back in 2008. James was always a welcome visitor as he was so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about so many things. He helped me, in my business in more ways than I can count. I will always remember James as being a true friend.”
