He was predeceased by : his parents, Willie Gray Matthews and Daisy Sykes Matthews; his former life partner Louise Gore Matthews; his grandson William Gray Myrick; and his brothers, Jerry and Gilbert Matthews.

He is survived by : his wife Margie Johnson Matthews; his daughters, Vicky Myrick (Colon) and Sherry Burnette (Todd); his stepdaughter Janet Ridgen (John R.); his grandchildren, Brook, Courtney Myrick and Allen Burnette (Michelle); his stepgrandson Patrick Ridgen; his great grandchildren, Addison and Camden Burnette; and his sisters, Nancy McDowell and Carolyn "Doll" Matthews.
