He was predeceased by: his parents, John Edward Smith and Margaret Nell Whisenant; his brother Claude "Richard" Whisenant; his half-brother Sonny Smith; and his sisters, Judy Smyre and Margaret "Jane" Edmisten.

He is survived by: his wife Rebecca McCall Whisenant; his children, Chris Whisenant, Jerry Whisenant, Jr. (Kristen), Angela Hayes, Kimberly Woody, Jenell Whisenant and Shawn Austin (Roger); his brother Jeffrey Chapman; his half-brother Mike Smith (Peggy); his sister Helen Greene; his grandchildren, McKenzie Whisenant, Aria Whisenant, Landon Whisenant, Emily Whisenant, Carson Sigmon, Ansley Sigmon, Payton Smith, Carter Whisenant, Kimmy Harbison, Kelly Sanders, William Whisenant, Wesley Edwards, Ryan Edwards, Casey Coffey, Clinton George, Cody McLeod and Hailey Austin; and his nieces, Revonda Richie and Julie Greene. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
