He was predeceased by: his parents, Lloyd Thompson and Alma Thompson (Mills); his siblings, Lona Hill, Tessie Rouse, Maud Hines, James, Lloyd Cecil, Thomas Lee, Gerald and Faye Herring; his son Herbert, Jr.; and his grandsons, Jeremiah Dickens and Jason Thompson.
He is survived by: his brother Donald of Kinston; his children, Susan Dickens (Patrick) of Greenbrier, Timothy (Genia) of Jacksonville, David (Marcia) of New Bern, Terry (Lamour) of Wilmington and Nathan of Jacksonville; his daughter-in-law Jane Thompson of Hubert; and his grandchildren, Tawnda Gillette (Blair), Kimberly Bell (Jason), Joshua Dickens (Kelly), Jayme Simmons (Daniel), April Lesh (Ladd), Daniel Thompson, Stephen Thompson, Mary-Catherine Pool (David), Jessica Rewis (Matt), Emily Vick (Tyler) and Josiah Dickens (Jacqui). He is also survived by forty great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Onslow Pregnancy Resource Center, 3280 Henderson Dr, Suite A, Jacksonville, NC 28546 or to Jones Funeral Home to assist the family in the funeral expenses.
