He is survived by: his wife Shelby Routh Smith; his stepdaughter Donna Barbre Johnson (Charles); his son John Smith (Donna) of Jacksonville; his stepson Tony Barbre of Asheboro, NC; his children, Betty Smith Howell (Martin) of Lamar, SC and Daniel Smith (Pamela) of Jacksonville; and his grandchildren, John Eric Smith (Ashley) of Jacksonville, Megan Barbre Lawson (Wade) of Asheboro, NC, Michael Barbre (Jen) of Flat Rock, NC, Sarah Vernell Foster of Portland, OR, Harrison Foster (Natalie) of Castor, LA, Elliot Barbre of Asheboro, NC, Danielle Smith Brown (Wesley) of Chinquapin, NC, Alston Smith (Abby) of Chinquapin and Allison Hunter of Brooklyn, NY. He is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Sunday, September 6th 2026 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Jones Funeral Home (303 Chaney Ave, Jacksonville, NC 28540). A funeral service was held on Sunday, September 6th 2026 at 3:00 PM at the same location. A burial was held on Sunday, September 6th 2026 at 4:00 PM at the Smith Family Cemetery.
