He was predeceased by: his father Henry Jacobs; his wife Mary J. Jacobs; and his sister Mary J. Caulder. He is survived by: his children, James R. Jacobs, Jr., Teresa Jacobs Gatton (Thomas) and Susan Jacobs Utt (Christopher); his grandson Robert Blake; and his sister-in-law Faye Malone (William).
