He was predeceased by: his parents, Lemuel Smith and Mary Smith; his mother-in-law Louise Kimmer; his sister Susan Mayberry; and his granddaughter Jessica DuVall (Ginny).
He is survived by: his wife Charlotte Kimmer Smith; his children, Stephanie DuVall of Wake Forest, NC and Dan Alexander (Leona) of Lexington, NC; his grandchildren, Matthew DuVall (Gale), Elizabeth Bridges (Megan), Daniel Alexander (Brittany), Taylor Hearne, Stephen Marshall (Rachael), Shikinah Bain (Josh) and Shriah Edwards (Dustin); and his great grandchildren, Ryder Hearne, Serena Hearne, Sophia Bain, Riley Bain, Stacy Alexander and Evelyn Marshall.
