He was predeceased by: his parents, Helen Laycock Grimes and John Edgar Grimes; and his sisters, Juanita McClellan and Connie Bray. He is survived by: his children, Amanda Pinkerton (Brian Pinkerton) and Jason Grimes (April Grimes); his grandchildren, Skylar Bartleson, Raymond Rucker, Cameron Pinkerton, Zackary Pinkerton, Alexis Rhyne, Jordan Rodriguez, Katie Grimes and Jacob Grimes; and his former wife Janis Maxwell. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren.
