He was predeceased by: his parents, William Fralo Mayes and Laura Jane Ellis Mayes; his former wife Nancy Hamrick Mayes; his wife Sallie West Mayes; his siblings, Roy, Bill, Lawrence, Clyde, Kenneth, Morris Mayes and Judy Philbeck; and his stepchildren, Kathy Self Crego and Joe Self.
He is survived by: his stepson Kenny Self (Beth) of Blacksburg, SC.; and his stepgrandchildren, Sarah, Allison Self, Ashley and Erica Self.
A member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Wayne made significant contributions to his community and was passionate about his work.
