He was predeceased by: his parents, Haywood Smith and Ada Smith; his foster parents, Lot West and Mayme Whitfield West; and his brother Joseph Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Beth Davenport Smith of Kinston; his children, Paige Hutto (Jody) of Apex, NC and Shawn Smith (Susan) of Garner, NC; his grandchildren, Hailey Tate (Sam), Josie Smith, Maddie Hutto, Jonah Smith and Jude Smith; and his great grandchild Ada Tate. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Carl's memory to the Wounded Warrior Project and Shriners Children's.
