He was predeceased by: his parents, Ben Chavis and Ruby Anderson Chavis; his son-in-law Walter "Jimbo" Cashwell; and his siblings, Fadrick Chavis, James "Bill" Chavis, Hearl Chavis, Ederson Chavis, Arrie Clark, Lee Ella Chavis, Sally Thompson, Victoria Chavis, Sarah Usher, Elizabeth Chavis and Addie Sampson.
He is survived by: his wife Josephine Carroll Chavis; his children, Allen B. Chavis (Vicki Tutor) of Laurinburg, NC, Martin Chavis (Dawn) of Laurel Hill, NC and Deborah Cashwell of Laurinburg, NC; his grandchildren, Ashley Byrd (Rodney), Brian Chavis, Beth Thorpe and Brett Russ; his great grandchildren, Andrew Priest-Chavis, Blake Patterson, Madison Byrd, Noah Thorpe and Madeline Thorpe; his niece Isabel Hawkins; and his sisters-in-law, Doreen Freeman (Carl) and Linda Chavis. He is also survived by loving nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
