He was predeceased by: his parents, John James and Ollie Carpenter Pope Melton; and his brothers, J. B. Pope, Bill Pope and Rodney Melton.
He is survived by: his wife Phyllis McDuffie Melton of Murrells Inlet, SC; his children, Mitchell "Louis" Melton, Jr. (Darrell Senter) and Michelle Melton Connelly (Jeff) of Walton County, GA; his siblings, Jimmy Melton (Wanda) and Janice Hogan of Rockingham; his granddaughters, Carrie C. Harris (Jackson) of Madison, AL and Olivia M. Connelly of Statesboro, GA; and his great grandchild James Jeffrey Harris. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, great nieces, and nephews, and dear friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be given to Scotland Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353.
