He was predeceased by: his parents, William Russell Sunderland and Bessie Lee Sunderland; his grandson Tommy Sunderland; his sisters, Catherine Snow and Sis Leamer; and his children-in-law, Cindy Sunderland and Leroy Smith.
He is survived by: his children, Russell Sunderland (Renee) of Marston, Thomas Sunderland of McColl, SC, Marilyn "Pumpkin" S. Chavis of Laurel Hill and Janice Whight (Ben) of Raeford; his siblings, Bill Sunderland of Mahafffey, PA, Bob Sunderland of Mahafffey, PA, Judy Stewart (Kurt) of Pennsylvania, Linda Hester of Utah, Janet Irvin (Dave) of Pennsylvania, Nancy DeYoung of Pennsylvania, Evelyn Slonaker (Sonny) of Pennsylvania, Shirley Sunderland of Pennsylvania and Mary Pennington of Pennsylvania; his grandchildren, Paige Smith Haywood, Lee Smith, William Sunderland, Morgan Sunderland, Stephen Sunderland, Phillip Graham, Roger Sunderland and Michael Haines; his caregiver Terry Watts; and the mother of his children Betty Sunderland. He is also survived by loving nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, October 20th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Laurinburg Memorial Park (11007 Academy Rd, Laurinburg, NC 28352).
