He was predeceased by: his father William Nelson; his sister Betty Chapman; and his wife Patricia Benfield Nelson. He is survived by: his close friend Doris Warren; his children, Kresia Kerley (Billy) of Taylorsville, Sherry Helton (Joseph) of Lenoir and Randy Nelson (Monique) of Hudson; his granddaughter Samantha Lewis; his children, Ross Helton, Zac Helton, Eli Helton, Asheton Nelson, Julia Nelson, Daphne Jenkins, Nate Lambert, Rodney Nelson, Jr. (Joanie) of Lenoir, Tabitha Winebarger and Shana Shemik; his great grandchildren, Cortney, Hailey and Caddy Lewis; and his grandchildren, Ziggy, Penelope Helton, Lily, Riley Jenkins, Trinity Nelson, Levi Winebarger, Shaylee and Hawkins Shemik.
