He was predeceased by: his parents, Lawrence E. Lanier and Lessie Shoaf Lanier; his significant other Mildred P. Lanier; and his son-in-law F. David Koontz. He is survived by: his daughter Joretta L. Koontz; his grandson Shannon D. Koontz (Susan); his great grandchildren, Sara Koontz and Sydney Styers (Cody) of Lexington; and his caregivers, Ruby Wagner, Eva Funderburk and Dallas. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Davidson County or Second Reformed United Church of Christ.
