James Byrd Obituary
With solemn hearts, we announce the passing of James Byrd of Lexington, North Carolina, whose presence will be deeply missed, having departed on January 19, 2026. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
He was predeceased by: his parents, Isaac Sanford Byrd and Ella V. Whitaker Byrd; his son-in-law Jeff Leonard; his siblings, Harlton Whitaker and Doris Sharpe; and his brother-in-law Jim Sharpe (Barbara Bailey).
He is survived by: his wife Gayle Byrd; his daughters, Jamie Byrd Davis (Ben) and Dana Byrd Leonard; his siblings-in-law, Albert Bailey and Samira Wood; his grandchildren, Julia Cornell (Jacob), Lindsay Kimbrell (Zach), Rachel Mills (Garrett), Madelyn Cauthen (Ashton) and Haylee Leonard (Brick Wilkins); his great grandchildren, JJ, Sage, Eliana, Adelie, Lilly and Reid; and his pet Pebbles. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Hinkle Hospice House or Tyro Methodist Church.
