He was predeceased by: his mother Ada Mae Pennington Hankins; his sister Betty Jean Robicheau; and his brother-in-law Tim Love. He is survived by: his wife Jimmie "Elizabeth" Freedle Hankins; his children, Christopher Allen Hankins (Rhonda), Magnolia Fields and Catrina Watkins; his sisters, Jackie Vestal (Ralph) and Clara Love (Eddie Phillips); his grandson Reuben Hankins; his brother-in-law Eddie Robicheau; and his siblings' children, Julie Aker (Jim), Jennifer Craver (Zack), Amanda Crouch (Nathan), Angie Haynes, Daniel Love (Debbie) and Jeremy Haynes (Casey).
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Homeless Shelter, and/or Wildlife of NC.
