He was predeceased by: his parents, Shelton Townsend and Mamie Warwick Townsend; and his brothers, Robert Townsend, Horace Townsend and Kenneth Townsend.

He is survived by: his wife Denise Tyner Townsend; his son William Blake Townsend (Maureen) of Lumberton, NC; his sisters, Ruth Kissam of Evergreen, NC, Thelma Stone (Francis) of Lumberton, NC, Betty Leggett (Larry) of Rockingham, NC and Carolyn Caulder (Ray); and his grandchildren, Allyssa Blakelynn, William Brennan and Phoenix Jase.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to American Heart Association.
