He was predeceased by: his parents, Prentice Edward Thomas and Hettie Mercer Thomas; his wife Joyce Musselwhite Thomas; his siblings, Rufus Lee Thomas and Allie Faye Jones; and his son Purvis E. Thomas "Tommy", Jr..
He is survived by: his children, Donald Lee Thomas of Lumberton and Joy Thomas Lawson (Chris Lawson) of Durham; his daughter-in-law Kathy Warfel Thomas of Durham; his sister Joyce Thomas Broadwell of St. Pauls; and his grandchildren, Erin Lawson, Jacob Lawson, Nicole Elam and Greg Elam. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends.
