He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard H. Shafer and Ida Bailey Shafer; and his sister Jane. He is survived by: his wife Carol Ann Mikula Shafer; his daughter Elisa Shafer Tran (Phuoc) of Clarksville, Tennessee; and his granddaughter Kiriana Tran.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 22nd 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery (962 Old U. S. Hwy 70 West, Black Mountain, NC).
