He was predeceased by: his parents, Martha Lee Barton Smith and Jessie Smith; his wife Edna B. Smith; his siblings, Henry F. Smith and Eula P. Kelly; and his daughter Vivian Mullin Oxendine.
He is survived by: his children, Leon Smith (Jennifer), Jesse M. Smith, Van Jones (Patsy), Carla Kay Locklear (Clifford) and Fredia S. Bullard (Ronald); his siblings, John Rockefeller Smith (Juanita), Darius Jacobs (Nancy) and Betsy Ross Maynor; and his caregiver Mary Ann Morgan. He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren, seventeen great-great grandchildren.
