Paul Jerome Weiland Obituary

Paul Jerome Weiland was born on September 23rd, 1955, in Mitchell, SD. He was the third of four children born to Jack and Cecelia Weiland.

Paul grew up in various cities in South Dakota eventually graduating from high school in Pierre, SD in 1973. He continued on to college at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for one year before transferring to the University of South Dakota where he graduated with a double major in history and psychology in 1977. He elected to attend medical school over his other available choices of law school and psychology graduate school. Paul attended the University of South Dakota School of Medicine for 4 years and graduated with his MD degree in 1981. He then entered a residency program in Family Medicine at the University of Oklahoma Tulsa Medical College which he completed in 1984.

Paul began his medical practice in Mobridge, SD at the Mobridge Medical Clinic in 1984, practicing a full scope of Family Medicine, and remained there until 1991 when he left to begin a full time Emergency Medical practice in Minot, ND. He remained in Minot until 1996 when he moved to a full time Emergency Medical practice in West Plains, MO and subsequently continued in the full-time practice of Emergency Medicine as a locum tenens provider in various cities in Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois. He took a full-time position in Emergency Medicine in Louisiana, MO in 1998 where he remained until 2009. In 2009 he relocated to North Carolina and entered into the full-time practice of Hospitalist Medicine working as a locum tenens provider in various cities throughout North Carolina and Missouri until he entered semi-retirement in November of 2020. He became the clinical supervisor for the mid-level urgent care providers at CEMA/HealthWorx in Washington, NC in 2019 and continued on in that roll after entering semi-retirement.

Paul was an award-winning teacher of Nurse Practitioners, Physicians Assistants, Medical Students and Medical and Osteopathic Residents in South Dakota, North Dakota, Missouri and Illinois. He believed that giving back to the next generation of medical providers through hands-on personalized education, guidance and training was the most sacred responsibility of those who were fortunate to have become physicians in order to honor the many physicians and nurses who provided their training.

Paul was married to Jacqueline Prentice in 1983, and they divorced in 2002. Then, Paul met the love of his life, Sandra Anderson. They were married in Troy, MO in 2003 and they stayed together through the many times of joy and the occasional ordeals of married life growing stronger in their love every day. They moved to Bath, NC in 2009 after building their happily-ever-after retirement home on the waterfront in the Bayview area. Paul felt that it was only with Sandra's unflappable support that he was able to continue to provide hospital care to the very ill and dying during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020.

Together, Paul and Sandra enjoyed training and raising German Shepherd dogs and puppies, traveling, playing bridge, gardening, landscaping, building, remodeling and living life in general. They spent many winter-time weeks enjoying the warmth and culture of the island of Saint Martin. They enjoyed the company of many friends and relatives at any opportunity. Paul often told others "my life was just alright until God led me to Sandra and bestowed upon me the gift of a truly great life of love and companionship".

He was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Cecelia Weiland and is survived by his loving wife, Sandra and stepchildren David Janhunen, Catherine Bailin and stepdaughter Julie Porcelli and stepson Jesus Marquez and step grandchildren Owen Janhunen, Victoria Balin, Isabel Balin, Mihalia Balin and Gabriel Balin and step grandchildren Jacob, Isaac and Matteo Porcelli Marquez.
