He was predeceased by: his wife Cora M. O'Brien; and his sister Louise P. Hight. He is survived by: his sons, Gene Ray O'Brien, Jr. (Kim) of Greensboro and Patrick W. O'Brien of McLeansville; his stepchildren, Randy S. McKee and Theresa S. Lewis; his brother William T. O'Brien of Hendersonville; and his brother-in-law Thomas Hight. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren.
