He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas Calvin Coan and Queen Victoria Deese Coan; his wife Lula Mae Grant Coan; and his son Wayne Nelson Coan Jr.. He is survived by: his daughter Karen Fowler (Gerald); his sister Cora Sells; his grandson Jason Fowler (Jessica); and his great grandchildren, Kenley Fowler, Lucas Fowler and Dawson Fowler.
