He is survived by: his significant other Sylvia Carrigan Pipes; his children, Lila Walker (Craig) and John Walter Jr. Pipes (Bretta); his grandchildren, Traci Souza (Mel), Callie Stone (Dakoda), Caroline Billings (Caleb), Isaac Pipes (Bre), Micah Pipes and Addie Walker; his great grandchildren, Lillian "Lilly" Greene, Sadie Mae Stone, Serena Pipes and Daisy Jane Billings; and his brother Robert.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Atrium Health Levine Children's - Brenner Children's Hospital or Moravian Falls Baptist Church Van Project.
