He was predeceased by: his parents, Elwood Sonny Dowdy and Burla Ann Gilmore Schmidt; his brother William "Bill" Ernest Dowdy; his brother-in-law Douglas Hammer; and his niece Tammy Hammer.
He is survived by: his wife Virginia "Jenny" Kelly Dowdy; his children, Lisa Dowdy Stapleton (Roger), Kim Dowdy Cole (Troy) and Kelly Samuel Dowdy (Holly); his grandchildren, Reece Stapleton, Kacy Cole, Justin Cole, Teagan Dowdy and Kash Dowdy; and his sister Lynda Hammer Smith (Smitty).
