Mary Lou Hughes Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Mary Lou Hughes of Murphy, North Carolina, who passed away on November 7, 2023 at the age of 89. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

She was predeceased by : her parents, Hayden James and Bonnie Logan Hensley; her husband James A. Hughes; and her brothers, John Thomas Hensley, H. Russell Hensley and Leon Hensley.

She is survived by : her children, Kathy H. Kephart (Ryan) of Murphy, Daniel J. Hughes of Murphy, David A. Hughes (Melanie) of Murphy and Blake T. Hughes (Julie) of Murphy; her sister Rebecca "Beck" Penland (Bud) of Murphy; and her sisters-in-law, Janie Hensley of Brasstown, Mary Jane Brooks of Woodstock and Mozelle Shields of Murphy. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Mary Lou Hensley Hughes to John C. Campbell Folk School (Woodcarving Scholarship) http://www.folkschool.org.

She’s with her love Of her life James again and that makes me smile . I work at Belk in Cleveland and so many of our belk family dearly loved her . She was a precious soul .
