We announce the death of Mildred Edwards Sumlin of Nebo, North Carolina, who passed away on September 11, 2026, at the age of 86. Mildred will be remembered by family members, friends, and others whose lives were connected in meaningful ways. She was predeceased by: her parents, Guy Layfield and Annie Williamson Layfield; her former husband Marshall Edwards; her son Marshall K. Edwards; her granddaughter Amanda Edwards; her daughter-in-law Cindy Edwards; and her brothers, Henry Layfield and Russell Layfield.
She is survived by: her husband Gene Sumlin; her sons, Tim Edwards and James Edwards (Lisa); her stepchildren, Richard Sumlin and Tina Sumlin; and her sister June Layfield. She is also survived by two brothers; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, September 15th 2026 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Beam Funeral Service & Crematory (2170 Rutherford Rd, Marion, NC 28752). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 15th 2026 at 2:00 PM at the same location. A burial was held on Wednesday, September 16th 2026 at 2:00 PM at the McDowell Memorial Park (327 Memorial Park Rd, Marion, NC 28752).
