He was predeceased by: his father Robert Spann; and his brother Kenneth David Spann. He is survived by: his siblings, Karen Spann of Newport and Michael Robert Spann of Raleigh; and his siblings' children, Christina, Kristin, Cason and Mathew. He is also survived by four great-nieces and nephews.
