He was predeceased by : his parents, Chelcie McClay Hamby and Mae Bean Hamby; his former life partner Leoma Melton Hamby; his sister Mary Ellen Bumgarner; and his son-in-law Jeffrey Robbins.

He is survived by : his wife Barbara Hoagland Hamby; his children, Lynn Hamby Caudill (Dennis), Terri Hamby Truesdale (Wayne), Bobbi Hamby Robbins and Christopher Melton Hamby (Christy); his stepdaughter Jodi Hoagland Jennings (Reece); and his brothers, Tom Hamby (Fushia) and Ralph Hamby (Teodocia). He is also survived by ten grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren.
