She was predeceased by: her parent Author; her husband Robert Elwood Smith; her siblings, Clinton Whitley of Rayvon Whitley, L. V and Georgia Starnes; her son Tommy "Gene" Smith; and her grandchild DJ Green.
She is survived by: her children, Darrell Smith (Cathy), Irma Hedrick (Mark) and Dale Smith (Angela); her brother Harold Carter (Debbie); and her close friends, Linda Ray of New York and Linda Potts of Albemarle. She is also survived by five grandchildren, and a host of great grandchildren, as well great-great grandchildren.
