He is survived by: his son James I. (Angel) of Oakboro; his grandchildren, Joseph W. (Whitley) of Stanfield, James L. (Stephanie) of Oakboro, Heather Coston (Michael) of Boone and Jonathan (Erika) of Oakboro; and his great grandchildren, Paisley, Ruby, Phoenix, Jett, Zeke and Roman.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his honor to First Baptist Church Oakboro building fund and/or Tillery Compassionate Care: 960 N First Street, Albemarle, NC 28001.
