He was predeceased by: his parents, Coral W. Washington and Sherrill F. Washington; and his brother Herbert Y. Washington. He is survived by: his wife Isabel Roberson of Tarboro; his son J. Yancey Washington (Mary Kathryn); his grandchildren, James Y. Washington, Jr. and Emma Louise Washington of Oxford; his daughter Fairley W. Mahlum (David); his grandchildren, Annabel G. Mahlum, Robert "Bert" J. Mahlum, II and Oliver "Ollie" L. Mahlum of Raleigh; and his siblings-in-law, Edward L. Roberson, III (Susan) of Tarboro, Kathy R. Dudley (George) of Wake Forest and Gail M. Washington of Henderson. He is also survived by three nephews and a niece.
