He was predeceased by: his parents, Joe Nunn Thompson and Hattie Hodges Thompson; and his wife Joy Patterson Thompson. He is survived by: his children, Joseph Reid Thompson, Jr. (Ellen) of Oxford, NC and Shannon Thompson Deegan (Ray) of Durham, NC; his sister-in-law Dawn Scarboro of Salem, VA; his grandchildren, Jacob Reid Thompson (Josh Teder), Margaret Greylen Thompson and Danya Caylin Devine; his brother Irvin Thompson (Virginia) of Pelham, NC; and his sibling's children, Steve Thompson (Julie), Mitch Thompson, Lee Scarboro, Wendy Lane (Charles) and Kristie Powell.
