He was predeceased by : his wife Sabra Alice Chavis; his siblings, Randall W Chavis and Glenda Adkins; and his daughter Shelly Carol Chavis. He is survived by : his grandchildren, Erica Nicole Chavis, Raven Elizabeth Chavis, James Matthews and Nicholas Johnson of Florida; his great grandchildren, Sabella Aerionna Locklear, Chaska Wellon Rodriguez and Olivia Matthews; and his siblings, Dorothy Lowery, James E Chavis, Jr. (Mary) and Ed Chavis (Kathy).

Visitation was held on Tuesday, April 23rd 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Thompson's Funeral Home Chapel (2305 Prospect Rd, Pembroke, NC 28372). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, April 23rd 2024 at 3:00 PM at the same location.
