He is survived by : his wife Ida Mae Carter; his children, Debbie Carter Tolbert (Melvin), Stevie Carter (Sharon), Carolyn Askew, Antoinette Askew, Lorretta Askew, Sonya Wiggins (William) and Rodney Askew; his grandsons, Jonathan Tolbert, Daniel Tolbert and Benjamin Tolbert; his great grandchild Mikaya Williams; his siblings, Bernice Carter, William Carter (Janet), Lucius Carter (Millie) and George Carter; his foster brother Calvin Garris; and his goddaughter Ebony W. Mundy. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
