She was predeceased by: her husband James Virgil Bender; her parents, John Wesley and Ethel Williams Morton; and her siblings, John Wesley Morton Jr. (Jack) and Jane Morton Brittain.
She is survived by: her children, James Virgil Bender Jr. (Sheron), Mark Robert Bender (Kay) and Janet Bender Purvis (Blair); her grandson Robert Bryan Bender; her children, Rebecca Bender Mulvaney (Jack), Lauren Bender Meadows (Chad), Robert Pollock Bender (Hailey) and John Mark Bender (Dana); her great grandchildren, Hardy Meadows, Dixon Bender and Birch Purvis; her son Jay; and her caregivers, Deborah Bradley, Saundra Kinsey and Sudie Crouell.
She supported the Jones County Historical Society, the New Bern Historical Society, the New Bern Preservation Society, and the Tryon Palace Foundation.
